Architecture in Los Angeles: A Compleat Guide
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (March, 1985)
Authors: David Gebhard and Robert Milton Winter
Average review score:

A Compleat Guide: Indispensable, but unavailable!
This book is the indispensable follow-on to Gebhard and Winter's 1977 "Architecture in Los Angeles & Southern California," which itself was the greatly expanded version of the skinny 1960's edition. The geographical focus area of "A Compleat Guide" is tighter, but the depth and comprehensiveness greatly expanded.

The authors have made invaluable contributions the understanding of Southern California architectural history with these books, all of which are now out of print. Those of us who are fortunate enough to possess copies of Gebhard and Winter's wonderful books have found them to be of endless value in their travels through the region, not to mention architectural research.

Given that "A Compleat Guide" is the only book of its kind for the Los Angeles region, and an exceptional one by any standard, it is shocking and disappointing to find the title unavailable. When will this book be reprinted? We can only hope the publishers will come to their senses very soon.

Art in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1945-1980: An Illustrated History
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (June, 1985)
Author: Thomas Albright
Average review score:

A Durable Tribute to a Fine Art Critic
ART IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA 1945 - 1980 is the last written document by the highly regarded, departed writer and critic Thomas Albright. Always an elegant writer, even when his message was quircky, Albright has left us with the definitve volume on the important art of San Francisco in the peak of its heyday. The chapters each represent a lecture presented by Albright and include indepth studies of Clyfford Still and the Explosion of Abstract Expressionism, Before the Storm: The Modernist Foundation, The Watershed: Funk, Pop, and Formalism, "Back to Nature": The Bay Area Figurative School, Conceptualism, Photorealism, etc. The written word is well illustrated with selected examples, but therein lies the only weakness of this book. In an overview this solid it would be so much finer were there double the number of examples of the artists being discussed. Still in all this is a magnificent volume and should be a part of every art library.

The Art of Being Kuna: Layers of Meaning Among the Kuna of Panama

Authors: Mari Lyn Salvador and Los Angeles Fowler Museum of Cultural Histor University of California

WOW!
I bought this book from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

I have been fascinated with Native American tribes in South American for most of my life, particularly Panama and Colombia. This book is so thorough in expressing all aspects of life for the Kuna (or Cuna) that I would almost say this is the only book you would need to learn about the Kuna. It truly is incredible in its information as well as its photographs. It is VERY well done! Bravo Senorita Salvador! Espero ver mas libros de usted!

The Art of the Shaman: Rock Art of California
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (July, 2000)
Author: David S. Whitley
Average review score:

Book for Life
This is a fabulous book for someone who loves art, who is interested in ancient peoples, or for someone who is interested in preserving the past. Rock art, our global priceless heritage, is fast disappearing -- especially in such populated places as California. Dr. Whitley is among a handful of archaeologists in North America who are trying to understand this gift from the past before it is vandalized out of existence. Whether you like coffee table books or whether you just want to learn about rock art, this book is for you.

Authors: Pratapaditya Pal, Richard Gere, and Los Angeles County Museum Of Art

excellent
This is an expensive, coffee table book of Tibetan Art but it is well worth it. The color photos are numerous and large. The text is well documented and very readable without being too dry and academic. Highly reccomended.

Artful Players: Artistic Life in Early San Francisco
Published in Hardcover by Balcony Pr (May, 1999)
Authors: Birgitta Hjalmarson, William H. Gerdts, and Brigitta Hjalmarson
Average review score:

A starting point for Bay Area historical and museum enthusia
The author has given us an amusing and insightful look at the Art scene and history of the Bay Area and for frosting on the cake given us the location particularly in the Bay area, Monterey and Sacramento the location of Museums which have some of the art described in the book. As history and museum devotees the book will go with us when we visit these places to enhance our pleasure and increase our knowledge of the pictures we are looking at. We have in all probability looked at some of these pictures without comprehension at Sacramento, Oakland, and several museums in SF. The picture the author presents includes meaningful presentations of other related art centers to which the artists went. Excellent small book, a pleasurable read.

Artists in California, 1786-1940
Published in Hardcover by Hughes Pub Co (June, 1989)
Author: Edan Milton Hughes
Average review score:

Fabulous, Necessary Book for Collectors of California Art
This book is the most useful reference book about early California art that I own. For collectors and dealers, this book is a must-have. There are no photographs, just biographies, but for collectors the information provided is invaluable. This book took years and years of hard work on the part of Edan Hughes. He deserves praise and accolades for such a monumental achievement!
